Working strategically with broadcasters, on an international level, delivering their EPGs to the multi-screen world: IPTV, VOD, OTT, satellite, cable, terrestrial

The Difference Between EPG Metadata and Content Metadata

In any conversation about television data, the terms “EPG metadata” and “content metadata” are used frequently — and often interchangeably. This conflation is understandable: both are types of TV metadata, both describe television programmes, and in many operational environments they are managed and delivered together. But they are not the same thing, they serve different purposes, and the distinction between them matters for any broadcaster or platform operator who wants to manage their data infrastructure precisely.

Understanding where EPG metadata ends and content metadata begins — and where the two layers overlap — is the foundation of a well-designed TV metadata strategy.

EPG Metadata: The Schedule Layer

EPG metadata is schedule-layer data. Its fundamental purpose is to answer a single question: what is being broadcast, on which channel, at what time? It exists to populate the Electronic Programme Guide — the on-screen programme grid that tells viewers what is on now and what is coming up.

EPG metadata is inherently time-bound. Every EPG record has a start time and an end time, is associated with a specific channel, and is valid for a specific broadcast slot. When the programme finishes airing, the EPG record for that slot is replaced by the record for the next programme. In this sense, EPG metadata is constantly turning over — updated continuously as schedules evolve, as live events cause changes, and as the broadcast day progresses.

The core fields of an EPG metadata record include:

  • Channel identifier
  • Programme title (and episode title, where applicable)
  • Start time and end time
  • Programme synopsis (at the length variants required by each platform)
  • Genre classification
  • Episodic data (series number, episode number, series-link identifiers)
  • Technical flags (HD/SD, audio description, closed captions)
  • First-run vs. repeat indicators
  • A reference to the underlying programme or series record

The last item in that list — the reference to the underlying programme record — is the bridge between EPG metadata and content metadata.

Content Metadata: The Programme Layer

Content metadata is programme-layer data. Its fundamental purpose is to answer a different question: what is this programme? It describes the programme itself — not a specific broadcast of it — and its existence is not dependent on a schedule slot. A film that has not yet been broadcast, and a television series that finished production years ago, both have content metadata. That metadata exists whether or not the content is currently scheduled to air.

Content metadata is associated with a programme entity — a title in a content catalogue — rather than with a transmission event. It is the persistent, title-level record that sits in a content management system, a programme database, or a VOD catalogue and represents everything known about that programme as a piece of creative work.

Content metadata records typically include:

  • Programme and series titles (original language and localised variants)
  • Long-form synopses and marketing descriptions
  • Full cast and crew credits (with character names, biographies, headshots)
  • Genre, sub-genre, theme, and mood classifications
  • Country of origin, production year, and original language
  • Awards and critical recognition
  • Rating and review data
  • Related titles, franchise links, and associated content
  • Programme artwork (key art, stills, editorial imagery)
  • Rights and licensing information (territory, window, business model)
  • Parental ratings and content advisories (BBFC, MPAA, FSK, etc.)
  • Accessibility information (audio description availability, subtitle languages)

Content metadata is the layer that powers VOD libraries, streaming catalogues, on-demand search, and recommendation engines. It is also the data that underpins press and marketing materials, broadcaster websites, and editorial highlights documents.

Where the Two Layers Meet

The relationship between EPG metadata and content metadata is one of reference and inheritance. Every EPG record refers to an underlying programme entity — a content metadata record. The EPG record carries the schedule-specific information (channel, time, transmission flags), while the content metadata record carries the programme-specific information (what it is, who is in it, what it is about).

In practice, this means that much of the descriptive information in an EPG record — the synopsis, the genre, the cast — is drawn from (or should be consistent with) the underlying content metadata record. When a programme airs multiple times across different schedule slots, each EPG record for those transmissions references the same underlying content record. The programme description does not need to be written anew for each broadcast; it is inherited from the content metadata layer.

This relational structure is important for consistency. If EPG metadata and content metadata are managed independently, without a clear referential relationship between them, the same programme can appear with different synopses in different contexts — one description on the EPG, another on the VOD catalogue, a third on the broadcaster’s website. For viewers and platforms, this inconsistency is confusing and undermines the credibility of the content information they are reading.

The Practical Distinction for Platform Operators

For platform operators, the distinction between EPG and content metadata has direct operational implications.

EPG metadata needs to be updated continuously — daily at minimum, in near-real time for live event scenarios. It is delivered as a scheduled data feed, managed against a rolling schedule window, and governed by the operational requirements of the broadcast day.

Content metadata changes less frequently — it is updated when new programmes are added to the catalogue, when new seasons are produced, or when enrichment is improved — but it needs to be comprehensive, consistent, and maintained across the full depth of the content library.

Platforms that manage both layers well — with a clean referential relationship between the schedule layer and the programme layer, consistent data governance across both, and integration between the two in the viewer-facing interfaces — deliver a coherent content experience. Platforms that manage the two independently, without a shared data architecture, typically produce inconsistencies that are visible to viewers and create operational problems for content, editorial, and technical teams.

Why the Distinction Matters More in the Streaming Era

In the era of linear-only broadcasting, the distinction between EPG and content metadata was largely academic. The programme guide was the schedule, and the schedule was the guide. Viewers encountered content through the EPG, and that was the primary discovery interface.

In the streaming era, content metadata has become the primary discovery layer for on-demand content — the data that powers VOD storefronts, catalogue search, recommendation algorithms, and personalised content surfaces. As platforms increasingly combine live linear channels with on-demand libraries and catch-up services, both layers must coexist, interoperate, and maintain consistency.

The broadcasters and platform operators who manage the EPG and content metadata layers as a unified, coherent data infrastructure — rather than as separate, siloed systems — are the ones whose viewers navigate confidently, discover content easily, and experience the guide as a genuinely useful discovery tool rather than a technical necessity.
