The 12-part series presents the history of America\u2019s greatest original art from, from its humble beginnings in the 1890s in New Orleans to the present.<\/p>\n
The first episode, \u2018Gumbo: Beginnings to 1917,\u2019 explores how African-American musicians began to create a new music out of a combination of influences, from Italian opera to Caribbean rhythms.<\/p>\n
The second episode, \u2018The Gift: 1917 to 1924,\u2019 takes on two extraordinary cities\u2014New York and Chicago\u2014and two extraordinary artists\u2014Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington\u2014whose work will span almost three-quarters of a century.<\/p>\n
Further episodes explore the development of the genre through the 30s, 40s and 50s, before finally tracing its influences on present-day music.<\/p>\n
