Smithsonian Visits Jaguarland

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

Jaguarland (Wednesday 12th, 8pm) focuses on the largest contiguous wetland in the world, delving into the beautiful mosaic of grasslands, woodlands, rivers and lakes that some of Brazil’s iconic species call home: jaguars, tapirs, caiman, capybara and a stunning array of birds, alongside an astonishing 30 million cows.

The film follows the lives of several jaguars who live within a relatively small area of the Pantanal known as Jaguarland, which contains the highest density of jaguars in the world. Here, these elusive predators hunt caiman and capybara in the lush wetlands and are up to twice the average weight of jaguars elsewhere. The big cats are a major draw for tourists, and whereas they were once considered a threat, the jaguars are now seen by many as a valuable asset enabling ecotourism. Jaguarland is directed by Bristol’s Steve Cole.
