PBS Unveils WWII Deception

Thursday, May 7th, 2020

Allied deception tactics played an important role in the war against the Nazis, and fascinating film The Ghost Army (Friday 8th, 5.50pm) focuses on a group of American GIs whose mission was to conjure up phantom forces to keep Hitler and his generals in the dark.

By means of inflatable dummy tanks, the creative use of sound and various other forms of trickery, this top-secret squad travelled across Europe, creating a stream of disinformation to distract and confuse their adversaries. For decades after the war the work of these men, among them many talented young artists, was kept secret. Now their extraordinary story can be told, with the aid of archive footage, photographs, paintings and sketches, plus interviews with veterans of this very special unit.
