Are TV Listings Obsolete? The Case for the Programme Guide in the Streaming Age

It is a reasonable question. In an era when millions of people watch Netflix, Disney+, or YouTube without ever consulting a programme schedule, when the phrase “what’s on tonight?” is answered by an algorithm rather than a printed grid, and when linear television itself is in structural decline among younger demographics — are TV listings still relevant?

The short answer is: yes, emphatically. But the nature of that relevance has changed so fundamentally that “TV listings” is arguably the wrong term for what the programme guide has become. The Electronic Programme Guide of 2025 is not the Radio Times of 1975, not even the digital grid of 2005. It is the discovery infrastructure of modern television — and its importance has, if anything, grown with the complexity of the viewing environment it must navigate.

What the Programme Guide Actually Does

The programme guide has always served one fundamental function: helping people find something worth watching. The form in which it fulfils that function has changed enormously. The function itself has not.

In the streaming era, the challenge of finding something worth watching is more demanding than it has ever been. A viewer with access to Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, their broadcaster’s catch-up service, and a collection of FAST channels has access to tens of thousands of pieces of content at any moment. The historical problem — there was nothing on — has been replaced by its inverse: there is everything on, and the challenge is finding the right thing.

The discovery infrastructure that addresses this challenge — the search interface, the recommendation panel, the curated carousel, the EPG grid for linear channels — is the programme guide in its modern form. It is no longer a printed page or even a simple grid. It is the entire metadata-driven discovery layer of the television platform. And it is more important than ever, precisely because the volume of content that must be navigated has increased by orders of magnitude.

The EPG Is Not Dying — It Is Evolving

The linear EPG grid — the traditional channel-by-time matrix — is in structural decline as a primary discovery interface, particularly for younger viewers who use streaming predominantly. But this is not the death of the programme guide; it is the migration of the programme guide function to new forms.

The recommendation homepage. The personalised feed. The genre-filtered browse library. The search interface that surfaces content by cast, keyword, mood, or theme. The editorial carousel that says “we think you’ll love these.” All of these are programme guide functions — they help people find content — delivered through new interfaces powered by the same underlying metadata infrastructure that powered the original EPG grid.

FAST channels, ironically, represent a partial return to the linear EPG model — and their rapid growth attests to the continuing appeal of the scheduled, passive viewing experience that the traditional programme guide was designed to serve. There is a substantial audience for the simplicity of “tune in and watch whatever is on” — and that audience is finding its satisfaction through FAST rather than through linear broadcast, but through the same programme guide function.

The Stakes Are Higher, Not Lower

The argument that programme guides are becoming obsolete typically rests on the observation that viewers have other ways of finding content — through social recommendation, through streaming service home pages, through algorithm-driven autoplay. These observations are accurate. But they miss the more important point: all of these discovery mechanisms are themselves dependent on the quality of the programme guide infrastructure that underlies them.

A streaming home page is built from metadata. A recommendation algorithm processes metadata. An editorial carousel is populated from metadata. A platform search engine queries metadata. The “alternative” discovery mechanisms are not alternatives to the programme guide infrastructure — they are alternative interfaces built on top of it. The quality of the underlying metadata determines the quality of all of them.

In this sense, the programme guide function is not becoming less important. It is becoming less visible to viewers — and more fundamental to the infrastructure that determines their viewing experience.

The Consequence for Broadcasters

For broadcasters and platform operators, the lesson of this analysis is practical. Treating EPG and content metadata as a legacy function — something that needs to be maintained for linear broadcasting but that decreasing relevance justifies decreasing investment — is a strategic error. The metadata infrastructure that powered the traditional programme guide is the same infrastructure that powers every modern discovery interface. Degrading it degrades the discovery experience across the entire platform, linear and streaming alike.

The programme guide is not obsolete. Its form has changed. Its importance has not.
