LES MISERABLES (GREAT! Movies Saturday 25th September 9PM), the 2012 retelling of this classic epic period musical, earnt this film three Oscars including best supporting actress for Anne Hathaway’s powerful performance.
Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who after 19 years as a prisoner is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the ruthless police officer in charge of prison workforce. Valjean promptly reinvents himself as a mayor and factory owner. But after Valjean breaks his parole, Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison and mercilessly hunts him down for decades. Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette
after her factory worker, mother’s (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert’s relentless pursuit means he’s never far behind Valjean.
The story reaches its resolution against the background of the bloody Paris Rebellion of 1832.
