Living during the time of the Crusades of the 12th century, French village blacksmith Balian (Bloom) grieves over the sudden death of his wife and decides to join his long estranged father, Baron Godfrey (Neeson), as a crusader on the road to Jerusalem. The pair face a perilous journey to the holy city, and young Balian soon learns the value of honour and valour, with Baron Godfrey naming him as a knight.
