PBS – 9 May 2025 at 8.20pm
In the 1930s, German aristocrat Gottfried von Cramm defied his family’s wishes for a diplomatic career to become an international tennis champion. But his battles extended beyond the court. Despite his athletic achievements, his aristocratic roots, Jewish wife and hidden homosexuality drew the attention of the Nazi regime.
Facing immense pressure, including threats from Hitler himself, von Cramm was imprisoned and sent to fight on the Eastern Front. Until his death in 1976, he remained a symbol of resilience and integrity in the face of harsh persecution.
This two-part film explores the life of a true hero, highlighting von Cramm’s courage and endurance despite great adversity.
