Wednesday, June 9th, 2021

GREAT! movies classic brings you iconic movies starring Hollywood legend Humphrey Bogart (THursday 17th June from 9.55AM).

Washed-up film director Harry Dawes (Bogart) gets a second chance at stardom when he discovers stunning dancer Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner) in a nightclub in Madrid, Spain in The Barefoot Contessa. Pushed by his producer, Wall Street financier Kirk Edwards (Warren Stevens), Harry convinces her to screen test for, and then star in, his next big picture. But as Edwards’ possessive nature and the realities of stardom sink in, Maria seeks a way to escape. Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, this bitter-sweet satire of Hollywood is extremely well acted and won Edmond O’Brien the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Mankiewicz also an Oscar-nominee for Best Original Screenplay. There’s plenty of witty dialogue in this must-see classic comedy-drama.

You are in for a treat with The African Queen – one of the greatest movie classics of all time. Bogart stars as heavy-drinking engineer Charlie who operates a run-down river boat called the African Queen during 1914 in German East Africa. British Christian missionaries Samuel and Rose (Katharine Hepburn) must rely on Charlie for their travels until one day, a tragic event leaves Rose in the sole hands of Charlie and they must navigate their way through treacherous German attacks along the river.
