Washed-up film director Harry Dawes (Bogart) gets a second chance at stardom when he discovers stunning dancer Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner) in a nightclub in Madrid, Spain in The Barefoot Contessa. Pushed by his producer, Wall Street financier Kirk Edwards (Warren Stevens), Harry convinces her to screen test for, and then star in, his next big picture. But as Edwards’ possessive nature and the realities of stardom sink in, Maria seeks a way to escape. Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, this bitter-sweet satire of Hollywood is extremely well acted and won Edmond O’Brien the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Mankiewicz also an Oscar-nominee for Best Original Screenplay. There’s plenty of witty dialogue in this must-see classic comedy-drama.
