Das Boot (Tuesday 23rd, 9pm) is set in 1942, during World War II, and follows German U-boat U-96 and its crew, as they set out on a hazardous patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic, bent on harassing and destroying British shipping.
German U-boats have begun to take heavy losses and the film examines how these submariners maintained their professionalism and attempted to accomplish impossible missions, all the while attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served. It depicts both the excitement of battle and the monotony of a failed hunt for the enemy. Wolfgang Petersen directs, with actors including Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer, and Klaus Wennemann.
