In the channel premiere of The Cider House Rules (Monday 30th September 9pm), Tobey Maguire stars as Homer Wells, a young man raised in an orphanage and taught medicine by the doctor (Michael Caine) who runs it.

Disagreeing with his tutor over the controversial issue of abortion, Wells leaves home and finds work on a cider farm, where he meets and falls in love with another man’s girlfriend (Charlize Theron).

He is also forced to re-evaluate his principles when one of the farm workers becomes pregnant by her own father. This star-studded emotional rollercoaster will have you crying tears of empathy and joy, and is a truly endearing coming-of-age story.
