The Irish Civil War
PBS: UK PREMIERE Monday 26 – Wednesday 28 June at 7.30pm
Having gained ground with the War of Independence and the ensuing Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, the struggle for a free Ireland would, within a matter of months, become mired in a violent, bitterly divisive battle between rival Republican narratives.
On one side were those who supported the treaty, despite its shortcomings. On the other stood those who felt the sting of betrayal, and were not prepared to see their country remain tethered to the British Empire and its monarch. The aftershocks of the conflict would reverberate for generations to come.
Acclaimed Irish actor Brendan Gleeson narrates this absorbing three-part series, which takes an in- depth look at a tumultuous and tragic conflagration whose flames, as is so often the case, were fanned by intransigence.
