China: Treasures of the Jade Empire
PBS: Thursday 30 January at 8.50pm
For around 400 years, the Han Dynasty (202 BCE – 225 AD) laid the foundations of modern China. Now, newly discovered treasures from a royal tomb in Eastern China give a unique glimpse of the life, sophistication and splendour of China’s Golden Age.
Using cutting-edge technology, archaeologists are uncovering evidence of silk, jewellery and a new terracotta army. Concentrating on the tomb of Emperor Jing (188-141 BCE), we reveal mummies dressed entirely in the jade suits of armour as the ancient Chinese rulers strived for immortality.
With exceptional access granted to the film makers following a recent change in Chinese law, this film grants unique access to the glory of Chinese empire that rivals anything in the classical world.
