Some three quarters of a century on, as the brutal conflict that shaped the modern world slowly fades from living memory, intriguing and sobering remnants of its rusting, wrecked weaponry are still being unearthed. Presented by Dan Snow, absorbing series WORLD WAR II UNEARTHED (Saturday 3rd, 8pm) takes an archaeological approach to these fascinating time capsules – crashed aircraft, battle-damaged tanks, hidden bunkers – and painstakingly pieces together the compelling wartime stories that surround them.
Archive footage, world-class CGI, powerful personal testimony and expert insight are all brought to bear as former theatres of war, both on land and on water, continue to give up their secrets. Long buried or submerged, these military relics have much to tell the historian before they rust away completely.
