The three-part series Private Lives Of The Windsors (starting Monday 13th at 8pm) reveals inner secrets and startling stories behind three pivotal figures in the Royal Family: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, and Lord Mountbatten. The first episode looks at Lord Mountbatten, who became a World War II hero, whisperer to two kings, and ultimately the last Viceroy of India, who oversaw the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. Much of his and his family’s life was captured on film, including home movies of him with famous figures ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Jahawahal Nehru – some of them never broadcast before.
Paired with interviews that Mountbatten gave on camera, personal letters, and military archive, Private Lives Of The Windsors paints a portrait of his unusual relationship with a philandering wife, his mentorship of Prince Charles, and his friendship with Winston Churchill. Lord Louis Mountbatten was a man whose life spanned the end of empire. It would end in an IRA bomb blast in a boat off the coast of Ireland in August 1979.
