NBC’s hard-hitting detective series has been renewed for a 21st season, hailed in some quarters as making it the longest-running live-action series in TV history – though that’s a debatable accolade given Doctor Who ran for 26 seasons even before its 21st century continuation. Nevertheless, in US terms SVU has now overtaken the previous record-holders, these being its own parent show Law & Order, and the Western Gunsmoke.
“I am deeply proud to be a part of this groundbreaking show, and humbled to make television history today,” actress Mariska Hargitay said in a statement. “The longevity and continued success of SVU is a testament not only to the show’s powerful storytelling and ability to connect with viewers, but to its necessity. We have told important stories for 20 years, and we will continue to tell them.”
