The Story of Egypt: PBS on Monday 1 December 2025 at 8.30pm
In this epic four-part series, Egyptologist Prof. Joann Fletcher travels back in time nearly 20,000 years to chart the rise and fall of one of the world’s greatest lost civilisations: Ancient Egypt.
Beginning her journey by visiting the site of the first settlements along the River Nile, Fletcher explores some of the world’s earliest surviving art, writing and stone structures to discover how, in just a few centuries, Egyptians progressed from primitive farmers to pyramid builders.
Egypt suffered the chaos of famine and civil war before the Thebans emerged to build a new golden age and forge an empire. But the age of the great pharaohs later gave way to rule by the Nubian kings, and the land ultimately fell to the Romans.
