Women of World War II: The Untold Stories
PBS: UK PREMIERE Friday 18 July at 8.55pm
American women were the secret weapon that won World War II – and in the process changed the world. Hear directly from the women who made the planes and flew them; who served on the front lines and the home front; who broke codes and broke barriers.
This new documentary honours their sacrifice with moving tributes from the descendants they empowered and inspired.
With more than forty interviews, it includes first-hand accounts from the women who cracked the codes and built the ships, ‘Fly Girls’ who saved their fellow pilots and ‘Rosie-the-Riveters’ who kept the planes in the air. Hear from Japanese-American women who braved incarceration camps and the African-American battalion that battled Jim Crow as well as the Axis.
