Mariupol: UNlost Hope

Mariupol has suffered terribly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Once the country’s tenth largest city, following a three-month-long siege its population has been reduced from over 425,000 to an estimated 100,000, with many of its civilians either dead or displaced.

Mariupol: UNLost Hope tells Mariupol’s story through the eyes of those who lived through the first month of the Russian invasion, creating a stark record of what has been described as a crime against humanity. Among them are journalist Nadia Sukhorukova, who describes being a spectator to the death of hundreds of people.

A shocking account of ordinary people trying to survive an extraordinary situation, it’s the story of a city where the only thing that hasn’t been destroyed is hope.

Sam (Chris Hemsworth) and Leslie (Victoria Profeta), their finances in ruins, think their luck has changed when they find a briefcase full of money in CASH (Tuesday 28th, 9pm).
Rather than turn the windfall over to the authorities, they decide to keep it in the hope of buying themselves a better life. But no sooner have they spent the cash when a sinister stranger (Sean Bean) appears on their doorstep, and he refuses to let the couple off the hook until they pay back every penny. This quirky psychological thriller explores the mysterious power which money wields over humans, triggering despicable acts to possess it.

Their job was to represent the best of American ideals abroad. Yet at home, they faced racial discrimination. The US State Department was slow to bring the elitist, “pale, male and Yale” Foreign Service into the modern, desegregated world. Refusing to let unjust and obstructive social attitudes stand in their way, the three men profiled in AMERICAN EXPERIENCE documentary THE AMERICAN DIPLOMAT (Wednesday 29th, 5.50pm) would achieve prominent appointments during the Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, and each would leave a lasting imprint on the field of diplomacy.
Rare archival footage, in-depth histories and interviews with family members, colleagues and diplomats all contribute to this inspiring portrait of African-American ambassadors Edward R. Dudley, Terence Todman and Carl Rowan, and their extraordinary legacies.

But Joseph Stalin was an unscrupulous dictator, a despot who exerted a malign influence over Russia. Stalin’s ascent to supreme power was a remarkable testament to his ruthlessness. In the 1930s, his obsession with eliminating potential threats and extinguishing the influence of rivals such as Trotsky would lead to countless deaths. And with the onset of the Cold War, his mounting paranoia fuelled official Soviet policy.
Drawing upon a wealth of new material, absorbing documentary STALIN: INSIDE THE TERROR (Friday 24th, 8.50pm) offers an intimate portrait of the Georgian revolutionary who, in an ostensibly collectivist state, would become a ‘Red Tsar’.

For anyone in the mood for a fun date night, then DATE NIGHT (Sunday 12th, 9pm) has a hilarious twist on the tradition. Claire and Phil Foster (Tina Fey and Steve Carell) are a typical suburban couple whose lives, including their weekly date nights of dinner and a movie, have become routine.
To reignite the marital spark, they visit a trendy Manhattan bistro where a case of mistaken identity turns their evening into the ultimate date night gone awry. But as Claire and Phil take their unexpected walk on the wild side, they begin to remember what made them so special together.

The wild adventures continue, as cameras take a further glimpse into Florida’s famous Zoo Tampa. With new animals joining the party, the Sunshine State’s beloved zoo opens its doors once again, giving National Geographic behind the scenes access to the hilarious and heartfelt moments that occur every day. In this season, viewers can enjoy the daily goings-on of the exotic cast of animals that live there, as well as see the hard work from the zookeepers who keep them happy and healthy. From African elephants to Florida panthers, this season is sure to be just as good as the last. 
SECRETS OF THE ZOO: TAMPA plays Tuesdays at 8pm, from 14^th March

Legendary film maker Cecil B. DeMille directs the classic big screen duo of Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea in UNION PACIFIC (Sunday 5th, 7pm), an explosive Western about the struggle to build America’s first transcontinental railroad.
It’s epic, action-packed entertainment as Jeff Butler is hired by the Union Pacific Railroad to root out the saboteurs who’ve been launching savage attacks on the construction of the first transcontinental railway line. He discovers an extensive network of criminals bent on stopping the train, including his former pal Dick Allen and gamblers Sid Campeau and Jack Cordray. Amongst a treacherous terrain Jeff and Dick also compete for the love of a brave postmistress, Mollie, and the fate of a railroad line which will change all their lives forever.

The US government promises the families of their war dead that every soldier killed in action will be returned home, no matter how long it takes. In 1967, at the height of Operation Rolling Thunder, the most intense aerial campaign of the Vietnam war, two pilots – Major Herman Knapp and Lt David Austin – went missing after they were shot down close to the border with Laos. Now, a JPAC (Joint Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command) team has been called in to help bring their bodies home.
Nearly forty years on, MISSING IN ACTION (Tuesday 14th, 7.35pm) follows the search for the two pilots, as well as telling the story of Knapp’s widow, Helena, who wants the search to stop.

A glimpse into the life of one of earth’s deadliest predators is just a slither away, as National Geographic WILD introduces viewers to some of the biggest venomous snakes on the planet. Witness the intimate stories of cobras, mambas and viper families as they live large on screen, with close-up access to the deadly reptiles.  See them hunt, search for mates, breed and evade the ever-present threat of humans.  By the end of each hour-long episode, viewers emerge with totally different perspectives on these impressive and misunderstood creatures.
LEGENDS OF VENOM begins Tuesday, 7^th March at 8pm.

On 6 June 1944 the Allies finally launched their full-scale assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. What was it like for those who took part in the fighting, with no idea of the outcome and no guarantee of their own survival? Offering the dramatic recollections of those who were there, revealing documentary D-DAY: LAST WORDS (Thursday 2nd, 9.25pm) delves beneath the legends that have grown up around the struggle to secure an all-important foothold on the Normandy beaches.
From a British sailor who laid underwater charges to knock out German defences, to Canadians, Americans, French partisans and German defenders, moving interviews are combined with new-found footage and dramatic reconstructions to place the viewer at the heart of what would come to be known as ‘The Longest Day.’

A powerful, award-winning epic centered around the conflict at Gudacanal during the Second World War, Terrence Malick’s 1998 THE THIN RED LINE (Saturday 25th, 9pm) features a talented frontline cast including Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson and George Clooney.

The film explodes into action in a hauntingly realistic view of military and moral chaos. This adaptation of James Jones’ autobiographical 1962 novel is a thought-provoking meditation on man, nature, and violence.

Martinique Lewis journeys on a coast-to-coast trip of the United States of America, embarking on a journey to visit historically listed Green Book locations. She will visit these modern-day historic landmarks and gain valuable insight into the stories and knowledge of these cherished places. Talking to local experts along the way, she will learn the history of the fantastic Black businesses and safe havens that boomed across the country during a time of racial strife.  

BLACK TRAVEL ACROSS AMERICA launches Friday 24^th February at 9pm.

Based on a gripping, unbelievable true story of money, power and decadence, channel premiere THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE (Tuesday 21st, 9pm) takes a white-knuckle ride deep into the lawless playground of excess and violence that was Baghdad, 1987.
Summoned from the frontline to Saddam Hussein’s palace, Iraqi army lieutenant Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper) is thrust into the highest echelons of the ‘royal family’ when he’s ordered to become the ‘fiday’ or body double to Saddam’s son, the notorious ‘Black Prince’ Uday Hussein (also Dominic Cooper), a reckless, sadistic party boy with a rabid hunger for sex and brutality. With his and his family’s lives at stake, Latif must surrender his former self forever as he learns to walk, talk and act like Uday.

Some three centuries ago, the Jacobites embarked upon one of the most audacious rebellions in British history. Two-part documentary REBELLION: THE STUARTS IN EXILE (Monday 20th, 7.15pm) sees Dr Clare Jackson shedding new light on the threat – political, military and cultural – posed by the rebels to what was then the embryonic British state. Also explored are the wider European dimensions of a campaign culminating in Bonnie Prince Charlie’s 1745 defeat at Culloden, along with a look at its contemporary relevance.
Dr Jackson also reveals why so many otherwise law-abiding Scots and English were ready to support the Stuarts, and examines how the new Protestant Hanoverian regime hung by a thread, with the monarchs struggling to impose their authority on often hostile and anti-European subjects.

Journalist Mariana Van Zeller invites viewers to join a trip down one of the planet’s most dangerous pipelines, as she taps into her underworld contacts to embed into some of the world’s most notable illicit smuggling operations. In each episode, she puts her safety on the line to follow one illegal, and often incredibly dangerous, black-market organisation. Detailing the journey from its mysterious source to its final destination, the award-winning journalist examines the lengths some will go to in order to export guns, drugs and even organs.  Exploring the inner workings of the world’s most dangerous, dark, and deadly criminal establishments, this adventure is not for the faint hearted.

Join Mariana Van Zeller as she unpicks the hidden world of crime in TRAFFICKED WITH MARIANA VAN ZELLER, which airs Sundays at 9pm, from the 19^th of February.

J. J. Abrams’ brilliant sci-fi thriller SUPER 8 (Saturday 11th, 9pm), starring Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler, tells the story of a group of young teenagers in 1979 who are filming their own Super 8 movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town.
Originally believing the train crash to be a tragic accident, the young teens of this small Ohio town soon come to realise that there’s more to this catastrophic train crash than it seems, and the derailment may not have been an accident at all. The teens begin an investigation and soon unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in the town. The local deputy tries to uncover the truth, which turns out to be something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Big Cat Weekend is back, and to celebrate its launch, Nat Geo Wild have a whole host of feline-friendly content for viewers to sink their teeth into, starting with THE LION PRIDE NEXT DOOR (Saturday 11th, 7pm).

In Gir National Park, India, a first-time lioness mother adds to the strength of her pride with her newborn. Writing her own rules, she will do whatever it takes to raise her only cub. In her journey, viewers witness her teaching him to find food in a harsh and unforgiving wilderness, playing dangerous games with roaming males and even visiting a nearby town to hunt. Only once he has learnt can he claim his territory and fulfil his destiny within the pride.

Deep beneath Rome’s streets can be found hundreds of miles of underground tunnels and vaults. Constructed by the Romans, this vast subterranean labyrinth contains a catacomb full of thousands of human skeletons, all featuring an unusual burial ritual. While the skeletons show no sign of physical
trauma, and the cause of death remains unknown, there is historical evidence of waves of mass death occurring between the late 1st century AD and the early 3rd century AD.

An expert in reconstructing ancient DNA raises the possibility that these may have been victims of
the Antonine Plague, an epidemic that tore its way through the Roman Empire. THE CATACOMB MYSTERY (Sunday 12th, 6.05pm) follows specialists’ attempts to unlock the skeletons’ secrets, using DNA mapping and cutting-edge archaeology.

Ridley Scott’s stunning epic adventure KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Saturday 4th, 9pm) stars Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Eva Green and Edward Norton. Living during the time of the Crusades of the 12th century, French village blacksmith Balian (Bloom) grieves over the sudden death of his wife and decides to join his long estranged father, Baron Godfrey (Neeson), as a crusader on the road to Jerusalem. The pair face a perilous journey to the holy city, and young Balian soon learns the value of honour and valour, with Baron Godfrey naming him as a knight.
Balian must now fight to defend a besieged Jerusalem against impossible odds and the powerful leader Saladin. A visually stunning and impeccably crafted treat for Ridley Scott fans.

5,000 miles long and passing through 13 countries, the Silk Road has been described as the most famous trade route in history, and one that changed the course of civilisation. In THE SILK ROAD (Wednesday 18th, 7.05pm) Dr Sam Willis explores its fascinating story, beginning with Venice, a city shaped by trade, before travelling to China’s ancient capital, Xian. It was there that the Emperor’s desperate desire to protect his lands linked East with West, as he bartered precious silk for horses.
Taking in some of the most extraordinary sights on the planet, Sam visits the high mountain passes of Tajikistan, the Uzbek cities of Samarkand and Bukara and the legendary city of Persepolis, before ending his journey in Venice, where he visits Marco Polo’s house.

Caught in the blast, over half a century later the radiation experienced by the ‘Atomic Marines’ that set off the explosion has major implications for their

In August 1955, on a visit to relatives in Money, Mississippi, 14-year-old Chicago teenager Emmett Till was accused of whistling at a white woman. Punishment was swift. He was kidnapped, beaten, mutilated and shot, and his body dumped in the Tallahatchie River. When Emmett’s corpse was returned to Chicago his mother made the decision to leave his body untouched by the undertaker, with the casket open so everyone could see what happened to her son. It was a decision that would help ignite the civil rights movement.
THE MURDER OF EMMETT TILL (Thursday 12th, 8.30pm) examines the horrific crime and its lasting legacy as witnesses, friends and family members recount the tragic tale that continues to haunt America.

Still known and admired for her subversive, censor-baiting wit, the legendary Mae West took showbusiness by storm and left scarcely an entertainment medium unconquered. During a colourful career that spanned eight decades of the twentieth century, she left her inimitable mark on vaudeville, Broadway, the Las Vegas nightclub scene and, not least, Hollywood.

No stranger to controversy, she never shied away from complex social issues, and, in her own unique fashion, waged a slyly effective war on moral hypocrisy. This first major documentary on Mae West’s life and work, MAE WEST: DIRTY BLONDE (Friday 30th, 10.40pm) examines how this multi-talented writer and performer “climbed the ladder of success wrong by wrong” in a more restrictive era, and played her part in creating social change.

For thousands of years Britain has been shaped by the sea, and our relationship with it has been a crucial part of the British identity and its development, history and culture. In BRITAIN AT SEA (Tuesday 29th – Friday 2nd, 8.30pm), David Dimbleby takes to the water in his beloved red-sailed boat in an attempt to chart Britain’s complex and passionate relationship with the sea, travelling along our coasts and waterways as he visits ports, forts and other places intimately associated with our waters, and explores art, music and literature inspired by it.
From Turner’s seascapes to traditional sea shanties, along the way he’ll uncover the artefacts and meet the people that tell the story of this island nation.

For most of the 17th Century, the Stuart dynasty ruled a newly united Britain during a period of religious conflict, civil war and political revolution. When Elizabeth I died, her cousin James VI of Scotland was installed as James I of England. His son, Charles I, was beheaded following a civil war and his family forced into exile.

Even after the Restoration, the family’s fortunes ebbed and flowed; eventually James II was forced from
the throne by his own daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange. Join Dr Clare Jackson for THE STUARTS (Monday 14th – Wednesday 16th, 8.45pm) as she takes viewers through the story of a family who, though an era of political violence and spiritual conflict, helped lay the foundations of the modern UK.

Using the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a peg, Smithsonian invite viewers on a fantastic voyage that celebrates this branch of African-American life in AFROFUTURISM: THE ORIGIN STORY (Thursday 10th, 9pm).

Beyond the aesthetic of cool clothes, trippy visuals, and Black protagonists in space, they examine an art form that was celebrated a century before it was even named in 1994.

Gordon Ramsay is about to embark on his most personal challenge yet, as National Geographic reintroduces him to those he once taught, both in the kitchen and at home.  In UNCHARTED SHOWDOWN (Wednesday 9th, 8pm), Gordon faces off against UK star chefs Paul Ainsworth and Matt Waldron, who got their first starts in Ramsay’s kitchen before embarking on their own culinary journey. 

Meanwhile in Costa Rica, Gordon faces his biggest challenge yet: going head-to-head with his daughter Tilly to see which Ramsay truly runs the kitchen.  Join the showdown this series, and see if Gordon Ramsay helped morph his students into the master.

Get into the Halloween spirit with these frightening films! Supernatural horror THE CRAFT (Monday 31st, 9pm) stars a pre-Scream Neve Campbell. Sarah (Robin Tunney) has always been different, so as the new girl at St. Benedict’s Academy she immediately falls in with the high school outsiders (Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True). But these girls won’t settle for being powerless misfits. They have discovered ‘the craft’ and they are going to use it.
Then, at 11.05, Emily Blunt stars in the creepy WIND CHILL. Just before their university campus goes quiet for the winter break, a young woman (Blunt) asks a classmate for a lift home. The two students set
off on their trip and begin to get to know each other. But, when a reckless motorist drives them off the road, they find themselves stranded in the snow on a remote highway. Bad enough, but as the night grows colder, the two are also confronted by a horde of menacing ghosts and struggle to escape with their lives.

When SS General Hans Kammler, a key figure in the Nazis’ secret weapons programme, vanished in 1945 he was said to have taken his own life. Yet recently discovered documents cast doubt on this claim. Although he oversaw a vast network of underground sites essential to the Nazi war effort, and was instrumental in the construction of concentration camps whose inmates were put to work as forced labourers, his disappearance meant he avoided prosecution for war crimes at Nuremberg.

Absorbing documentary HITLER’S SECRET WEAPONS MANAGER (November 2nd, 9.45pm) investigates the various rumours concerning Kammler’s fate, including the possibility that the Allies considered his knowledge valuable enough to have him covertly spirited away across the Atlantic, behind a convenient smokescreen of mystery and confusion.

Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson return to WILD at 8pm on November 1st as CRITTER FIXERS – COUNTRY VETS brings on its second season.  With a list of 20,000 patients under their belts, the doctors are back and better than ever, ready to treat and protect all kinds of animals.

The story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I, is told in David Lean’s Oscar-winning, sweeping epic LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (Sunday 23rd, 7pm).
With his knowledge of the local Bedouin tribes, British Lieutenant T.E. Lawrence (Peter O’Toole) is sent to Arabia to seek out Prince Faisal (Alec Guinness) and serve as a liaison between him and the British in
their fight against the Turks. Lawrence rebels against the orders of his superiors and strikes out on a
daring camel journey across the harsh desert to attack a well-guarded Turkish port.

Signed amid hopes that the mass carnage of the First World War would never be repeated, the
1919 Treaty of Versailles was, ironically, to open up seemingly irresolvable conflicts that fester
to this day. This attempt to ensure lasting peace by creating a new world order in which nations
would enjoy self-determination met with insurmountable problems, as this series explains. Noble ideals soon ran up against harsh realities.
Focusing on Eastern Europe and the Middle East, A BLOODY LEGACY (Monday 24th, 6.15pm) shows how ill-considered decisions arrived at a century ago would lay the groundwork for lasting strife. For any true understanding of many present-day conflicts in these regions and elsewhere, it is necessary to examine their roots in the resolutions agreed at Versailles.
